  • Research Topics and TechniquesThe Laboratory for Computational Cognitive & System Neuroscience (CCSN)investigates mechanisms underlying the activities of neuronal circuits in correlation with cognitive brain states. We are particularly interested in the emergence, development, and termination of collective behaviors across the various scales of neuronal organization, from individual neurons to functional ensembles. We combine theoretical tools such as nonlinear dynamics and statistical analysis to experimentally obtained multi-modal brain signals. In addition to conventional multi-unit and local field recordings, we emphasize the use of functional brain mapping techniques that allow us to monitor the regional activities in large area simultaneously. We use transgenic mouse model to correlate the molecular and cellular perturbation to large scale dynamics.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesOur lab is investigating novel roles of intracellular organelles like mitochondria and ER in neurons using innovative in vitro/in vivo techniques. Our study will expand the table of contents in a neurobiology textbook, and this knowledge will be applied to various psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

    Research Topics
    1) Synaptic transmission mechanism: Our lab is investigating novel roles of intracellular organelles at synapses using innovative live imaging techniques.
    2) Neural circuit: While the first topic focus on the fundamental synaptic mechanism of individual neurons, actual brain is functioning based on neural circuits. Therefore, our lab will expand the knowledge from a neuron to the circuit level using various techniques including in utero electroporation, virus injection, brain slice imaging, and in vivo imaging.
    3) Neurodegenerative disease: Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, show dysfunction of intracellular organelles. However, their related mechanisms are not well known, therefore, our lab will apply our techniques to unveil pathophysiological mechanisms and this study will lead us to the potential target for treatment.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesThe mission of our lab is to understand pain and emotions in the perspective of data science, cognitive/affective/social neuroscience, and psychology. We also aim to develop clinically useful neuroimaging models and tools that can be used and shared across different research groups and clinical settings. Our main research tools include functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), psychophysiology measures (skin conductance, pupilometry, electrocardiogram, respiration), and other behavioral measures such as facial expression, eye movement, etc. Most importantly, we use data science (computational) tools to model and understand affective, cognitive, and behavioral responses.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesPerceptual and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab aims to understand how the brain represents and processes a range of perceptual and cognitive information – from low-level sensory features to high-level contexts and predictions. Contrary to our rich and seamless experiences of the external world, raw sensory data are only partial. To investigate how the brain creates enriched internal models of our environment from impoverished sensory data, we examine the human brain at the network level, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and computational approaches (model-based encoding/decoding using machine learning, functional connectivity, graph theory). Functional brain imaging enables us to identify the brain circuits and networks underlying perception, attention, and memory, and to examine the interaction between regions and the functions of populations of neurons at each stage of the information processing stream. We also link psychophysical measures to fMRI responses to elucidate how the neural information relates to our cognition and behavior.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesWe use Drosophila melanogaster as an animal model and study the neural basis of complex behaviors. Behaviors of our interest are innate behaviors associated with female reproduction, such as mating receptivity, egg-laying, and sperm ejection behavior. With these, we are now investigating how a neuropeptide and its GPCR receptor signaling system modulates and reconfigures a behaviorally relevant neural circuit functionally. Technically, we combines behavioral analyses and in vivo neuron activity imaging technique with molecular genetic manipulations.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesOur laboratory wants to understand the neural mechanisms of how our daily memories (composed of objects and their visual backgrounds) are remembered in the brain. To systematically address such questions, our research efforts have been focused mostly on two tracks, one for visual scene(or visual context) recognition memory and the other for object recognition memory. We combine the behavioral paradigm with circuit-perturbing and electrophysiological recording techniques, to elucidate how perceptual scene representations are transformed into mnemonic representations. We also investigate how object memory is formed and retrieved in the brain, particularly in the perirhinal cortex in the medial temporal lobe

  • Research Topics and TechniquesOur research aims to unravel brain circuits that are important for selective attention, multisensory integration, and behavioral decision, which are critical for cognitive and perceptual behaviors. We are interested in computation in the cortex, how cortical neurons and areas are interconnected each other and process sensory and motor signals. Insights from our study should be broadly applicable to the treatment of cognitive disorders including attention deficit disorder, autism, schizophrenia, and dementia.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesThe goal of our laboratory is to understand the neural mechanisms that support decision making, interval timing and event memory. We investigate how neural processes underlying these functions are implemented in the rodent brain by examining discharge characteristics of neuronal ensembles in behaving animals, by examining effects of manipulating specific neural systems on animal's behavior and neural activity, and by computational modeling. We take these approaches under the premise that understanding neural circuit dynamics is a key to understanding the neural basis of brain functions as well as malfunctions.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesWe know that in our brain, information can flow and be stored at synapses. However, what we easily forget is that the majority of our brain cells are actually non-neuronal cells, called glia, which can be further divided into oligodendrocytes, microglia and astrocytes. Previously, astrocytes were thought to play only supportive roles for neurons, such as providing survival factors for neurons and controlling the concentration of neurotransmitters / ions released from synapses. However, recent work suggests that astrocytes play more active roles in neuron-glial interactions, especially in controlling the formation, maturation and plasticity of synapses. In our lab, we use primary cell cultures and mouse genetics to address fundamental questions relating to neuron-glial interactions in the healthy and diseased brains.

  • Research Topics and TechniquesOur laboratory aims to understand the central nervous system circuitry that regulates homeostasis. The fast increasing prevalence of metabolic syndromes including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension poses an enormous health risk worldwide. To resolve this issue, recent efforts from our laboratory have been devoted to identify mechanisms by which brain controls appetite, energy consumption, glucose balance, and cardiovascular function. Major technology used in our laboratory includes patch clamp electrophysiology experiments, in vivo metabolic assessments, and histology experiments.
